IAN HEFT, MA, MA(CP), RP – Registered Psychotherapist
See it,
Say it,
do it.
In addition to traditional talk therapy, I specialize in a number of “midbrain therapies” that seem to work at a deeper level to move strong sensations and emotions and produce relief. I am also the first Ontario-based trainer of Accelerated Resolution Therapy.
About Me
I am a psychotherapist in private practice based out of Owen Sound, ON and a PhD student in Wilfrid Laurier’s Community Psychology program. I specialize in trauma and addiction and have been practicing psychotherapy since 2021. I have worked in the human services field for over 15 years including in postsecondary student services, healthcare, employment services, language teaching, crisis intervention, community-based mental health and accessibility. I have worked in addiction extensively in myriad settings and worked directly in two First Nation communities for over 3 years.
I offer psychotherapy in a number of specialized modalities, training in Accelerated Resolution Therapy and clinical supervision and consultation services.

Therapy can help with:
Whatever your goals are, we can work together on processing past pain so that you can focus on a future that includes:
Being Happy
Fulfilling Potential
Making Changes
Finding Balance
My Philosophy
“Get that out of there!”
Probably the most common way I describe the work I do when it comes to processing strong sensations and emotions, especially related to past trauma, is that you are “clearing your plate” or “turning off the electric fence.” While no therapy can make certain future events pleasant, it does appear that clients seem to to process past events the way their brain might have if it hadn’t been impacted by the effects of how your body’s alarm system (or limbic system) responds when you have experienced trauma.
More than anything, I trust the brain and it’s capacity to heal itself and people’s inherent tendency to “grow toward the light” when you take obstacles out of their path. While being able to hold heavy hurt, I never push people to experience any difficult or distressing sensations they aren’t prepared for and if the work uncovers any distress from the past, we collaborate to work on it to reduce any discomfort that may arise.
